Water damages range from very small to very extensive as pictured above. When leaks are caught early, we can save a lot. Solid wood sustain water pretty well, can be easily cleaned, dried and reused. It is the opposite with particle boards, once they soak up moisture, they swell and need to replaced. Sometimes even a small spill can turn them into an unattractive deformed nests for pests. We do recommend to use solid wood for kitchens and bathrooms but it is not always cost effective, which is understandable in dry climates but much less in Hawaii. Then, small savings turn into big expenses.
