The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is among organizations calling for action about what they call a “fire problem” in the United States. While we can prevent most of our fires, we don’t. Candles alone are a major cause of fires.

• Start an estimated 7,610 home structure fires each year
• Cost $278 million in direct property damage on average, each year
• Are responsible for 21 reported home fires each day

The NFPA has several safety tips, among them:

• Never leave candles burning when you leave the house or even the room
• Don’t leave candles burning if there is a chance you will fall asleep
• Keep candles at least 1 foot away from anything that can catch fire
• Place candles on stable, fire-safe surfaces
