Are You Ready for a Hurricane in Kailua-Kona?

Aloha! Our local Hawaii and Maui teams respond to storm damage emergencies in Kailua-Kona 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Pacific hurricane season runs from June to the end of November each year, but only 30 hurricanes have come within 200 nautical miles of the islands, and few have made landfall since hurricanes began being recorded in 1950.
The State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency offers this helpful information for preparing for a hurricane:
- Have enough food and water to last for at least 14 days
- Include a battery-operated radio and essential medications
- Store your emergency supplies in a sturdy kit like a rolling cooler that you can take with you if you have to evacuate to a shelter
- Store one gallon of water per person for at least 14 days. You can store cases of bottled water or your own tap water in a cool dry place.
- Store high-calorie, shelf-stable food in a cool, dry place. Include nuts, ready-to-eat cereals, peanut butter, dried fruit, and canned soups.
- A whistle can save your life if you are trapped by debris after a storm or earthquake
- Include hand sanitizer, sanitary wipes, toilet paper, and bags to contain waste to keep you healthy following a disaster
- Keep a hard copy of prescription medicine in case you need to resupply after a disaster
