Captain Cook Locals Focus on Smoke Alarm Safety During Residential Fire Awareness Month?

10/7/2024 (Permalink)

A person holds a smoke alarm in their hand in front of a fire. We are fire damage restoration leaders in Hawaii and Maui.

Aloha! Our local Hawaii and Maui teams restore fire damage in Captain Cook every year, and we see the effectiveness of the smoke alarms when they work correctly. Residential Fire Awareness Month educates the public about fire safety and prevention in residential settings. The aim is to raise awareness about fire risks in homes and encourage individuals and families to take steps to reduce these risks.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. This week’s focus is on residential smoke alarm safety. Here are some facts about smoke alarms from the NFPA:

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level
  • Smoke alarms should be connected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection
